General comments:  Lovely peaceful setting. Giles was very helpful. Fishing was slow due to heat and also fish can all hide away in the big lily pads at the far end!

Our Trip to Mas Bas, Vernon Leadbetter, July 2004

The place is very tranquil and relaxing, some would say remote, so it's not really for people who dont enjoy being by the waterside fishing or observing wildlife. The kids loved the pool but my teenage daughter would have liked something a bit livelier!

The fishing is not easy and I would not desribe it as a "runs water", as the fish have been caught a few times before and are wary. I had 3 fish, a couple of commons just into double figures and a nice mirror of 33lbs 4oz on the last night. All the fish were caught in darkness and the hot days were a waste of time as the fish retreated to the lilly pads and were not really feeding. According to the fishing log (which has not been filled in by every angler since 2001) the biggest recorded fish caught is 36lb and at 33.4 mine was the second largest. The fish are wary of large beds of bait or ground bait, and accurate casting with a small pva bag or just a few loose baits resulted in the 3 runs I had (bream from around 1lb to 3 lb respond to the heavy baiting!).

I personally enjoyed it even though I did expect it to be easier (I only tend to fish uncrowded estate lakes, which tend to be quite hard by there nature). The beauty of Mas Bas is that I could fish in front of the house and still be with the family, which was definatley worth a brownie point or 2. Fishing for roach and skimmers was easy and kept the kids entertained for a couple of hours each day.

Overall we had a super time and would like to return, the fishing is my bonus as it makes a change from reading a book whilst sitting by a pool for a couple of weeks! Both Leslie and Gilles were very helpful and we instantly felt that a new freindship had been forged.

Regards Vernon
